We made a springtime movie!

In Grade 1 we talk a lot about the changing of the seasons and how we can spot patterns in nature. The melting of the snow and the arrival of spring puddles has been extremely exciting. We have been taking a lot of forest walks, and observing the changes we are seeing. We decided to make a movie about Spring! This is Mrs. Coventry’s first attempt at learning the imovie program! Watch for more Grade 1 blockbusters at a theatre near you!

So many exciting things!

Grade One has taken 2025 by storm! The class has done so many wonderful things. Skating, 100th day, art installations, new guinea pigs, the Valentine’s Day love factory, mini-Rendezvous, Pink Shirt day to name a few! And don’t even get me started about how they are rocking and rolling when it comes to literacy and numeracy. I am so proud of this lovely group of little people! Hope the smiles on faces capture the love of learning that these kiddos bring to school every day. It has been an awesome 2025 so far, and more amazing stuff to come!

Hello January!

We are back at school and there are lots of smiles in the hallways! January can be a bit tricky getting used to routines again and missing the joys of the holidays. We are having fun in our classroom and doing lots of activities to keep us going.

The kids really enjoyed trying out the sport wheelchairs in phys. ed. class!

We have been loving our Wednesday afternoons at gymnastics. Thanks to Liam’s grandma and grandpa for joining us. They are the best!

On Friday our whole school attended the Polar Nights show at the Arts Centre. It was amazing! Some of our GMP kids performed, and those of us in the audience were singing and clapping along!

This upcoming week we will be working with artist Nicole Bauberger on the Winter Garden project through the Artist in the School program. It is an amazing project where we will create large cardboard pieces of art that will be hung in our forest. I know the kids will love it and I encourage you to come and see it when it is finished. The whole school is participating!

A Christmas celebration in our classroom!

It was a wonderful day on Tuesday. The kids worked so hard to learn their Christmas songs. We loved performing them for the families who could come. Students prepared sentences to read in front of the group. There were some nerves beforehand, but they pulled it off beautifully! Thank you to Gray for being our Master of Ceremonies! Thank you for the treats brought and the kind words and all the family support. This class loves Christmas and they have the spirit of joy and generosity in their hearts! Happy holidays everyone!

A field trip to the movie theatre? Dream come true!

This was potentially the best day ever! We celebrated Ms. Jassy and all she has taught us. She gave us each a present and we gave her some too. And then the bus picked us up to take us to the Yukon Theatre. Holy Toledo - an amazing time was had by all. Huge smiles - the popcorn, the movie, the theatre all to ourselves. This was a day for the memory books!

We have a class website!

Check out what is happening in Grade 1 this week…

WEEK OF DECEMBER 2

Welcome to the first Grade One website post! I hope this space will be a useful tool for you. I will try to post once a week and I hope to share lots of pictures from our Grade 1 adventures!

We have had had some lovely visitors to our school recently, including the Salmon in the Schools program. We are learning a lot about Yukon animals and are in the process of writing our first class book! You can ask your kiddos if they are in the Eagle, Fox or Salmon groups and what they are learning about.

This upcoming week we have skating on December 4. Please send in your permission forms if you haven’t already. Please send your child with a helmet if they have one. We will use the CGC skates.

On December 5 we are going to see the movie Moana 2 at the movie theater. I will not be at school on December 6 so Ms. Jassy be the Teacher on Call leading the class that day.

We have welcomed Ms. Nina to our class in the role of Education Assistant. She is a great addition to our Grade One family. We also have Ms. Jenn working with us.

You all received an email progress update from me. Please reach out if you have questions. Also a letter will be coming out to families regarding the results of the numeracy assessments that were completed at the beginning of the year.

A reminder to mark your calendars for December 17th at 11:15. We will be having a little Grade One Christmas performance. If anyone would like to bring some cookies/snacks to share after please feel free and we will have a treats area. It is right before lunch so we don’t need too much. I am going to make some hot chocolate.

Continue to check the school newsletter and website as there are other school dates that you can find out about there.

Thanks so much for all your support!

Kathleen
